The three colors represent valor, purity, and justice. Thirteen red stripes represent the original 13 colonies. Fifty stars represent the 50 states. And during its almost 250-year history, men and women have fought and died to defend the freedom the American flag represents.
In 1949, President Harry S. Truman declared June 14 Flag Day to commemorate the 1777 act passed by the Continental Congress to establish an official flag for the new nation.
